January's Quiz Question was:
How did Charing Cross get its name?
The answer comes from this month's winner, Angus.
When Queen Eleanor, wife of Edward I died near Lincoln in 1290 her body was brought to London. The journey took several days and at each place her coffin rested for the night a cross was erected. The last being at Charing Cross.
The name is a derivation over the years of the French; “Cher Reine”, Dear Queen.
Congratulations to Angus Grieve, whose name was picked out of the hat to win January's Quiz - please email email@example.com to arrange the means of receiving your champagne!
