Possible changes to EPC Rating Deadline

Published: 04/04/2023 By Allan Fuller

We are still waiting for the Government’s report on its consultation on the increase in EPC rating for residential lettings, but even before it is announced it seems the definitions may be changing.

The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero has previously proposed a deadline of 2025 for new residential lettings to achieve an energy performance rating of at least C, and a deadline of 2028 for all other rented properties.

However, the rumour is that the deadline will now be extended to 2028. It seems that there has been a realisation that there is not enough time for older properties to upgrade. Across the country much of our housing stock was constructed long before any thought was given to energy saving and efficiency.

We will be watching developments closely and keeping our landlords advised as soon as there is clarity, meantime it is worth planning ahead, for example in many instances minor changes with improve a rating, such as switching to LED lighting.

If you are a landlord, check out the rating of your property, it will also contain information of areas that can be improved.
