Slipping under the radar during Emma Raducanu’s stunning success at the US Open last Friday was another significant achievement by a British tennis player.
29-year-old Joe Salisbury, who is based in Putney, won both the men’s and mixed doubles titles at Flushing Meadow this year.
On the same day as Emma’s triumph, Joe and his partner, the American Rajeev Ram who were seeded number 2, beat Giuliana Olmos of Mexico and Marcelo Arevalo of Argentina 7-5, 6-2. The win made Joe the first man to win the US Open doubles and mixed titles in the same year since Bob Bryan did it in 2010.
This wins comes on top of victory at the French Open for the pair.
Two days earlier, along with Desirae Krawczyk, Joe had won the mixed doubles. It was his partner’s third Grand Slam win of the year including taking the Wimbledon title along with Neal Skupski.
