With winter in full swing and the first snow we have seen this season falling, keeping warm and cosy is the preference of most. With that in mind I would suggest that if you wanted to grab a bite out and wanted something warm and with all the love of British tradition that you book a table and check out the lovely Putney Pies on the corner of Putney high street and Lower Richmond Rd with views of Putney Bridge and the Thames. They have an assortment of traditional dishes on offer and all pies are made fresh and on the premises, so if you are in the mood for something in the classic pie genre I would suggest trying either their steak and ale or chicken, portobello mushroom and leek pie! If you wanted to be a bit more adventurous then their BBQ smoked pulled pork pie or my favourite, the wild rabbit and apple pie (mmmm). All pies come with shortcrust pastry case and served with your choice of either mash and gravy or triple cooked thick chips. There is of course a selection of other sides you can add separately if you so wish. Not to mention a wonderful selection of ales on tap, craft beers, wines and spirits. Although pies are their speciality the menu is diverse and should have something for everybody, even the kids!
What I will say is that besides the food being amazing the atmosphere is matching, it is warm and the staff inviting, friendly and helpful which leads to an overall wonderful dining experience. Upon entering you might think it quaint and small but much like there pies, there is more than meets the eyes. There is a downstairs vault that runs below and across the road and opens onto a small outside area that overlooks the river. The vault is used for extra seating and dining when the kitchen is open and then transforms into a wonderful evening venue with live music and dj’s playing weekly. Perfect to grab a drink and a dance and burn off the excess calories after your meal!
The venue is open from Tuesday to Sunday and there is at the moment a great Tuesday Special; a selected pie and ale for a mere £15 per person.
For more information I have copied in the link below to their website.
If you do decide to try this wonderful establishment I hope that like me you are “taken pie surprise” and remember to “abide pie the rules”!
